mulled wine

vin brûlé

TOTAL TIME: 15 minutes

MAKES: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 orange
  • 1 (750 milliliter) bottle dry red wine
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2 whole juniper berries
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 whole star anise

Instructions

Using a sharp paring knife or vegetable peeler, cut peel from orange in wide strips, avoiding white pith.

In a large pot, combine orange peel, wine, sugar, cloves, juniper berries, cinnamon stick, bay leaf and star anise. Bring to a bare simmer (do not let simmer or boil) over medium-low heat; cook, stirring occasionally, about 8 minutes. Strain through a fine mesh sieve and serve hot.
