fresh dates with coffee cream

MAKES: 6 servings
- 1½ teaspoons instant espresso powder
- ½ cup whole milk
- 3 large egg yolks
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream
- 24 Halawi or Medjool dates
- 2 pints vanilla gelato
Dissolve espresso powder in milk. In a small saucepan, whisk together yolks and sugar. Whisking, slowly pour milk mixture into yolk mixture. Place mixture over medium-low heat. Bring to a very gentle simmer, whisking occasionally; let simmer until thickened, about 30 seconds (do not boil), then remove from heat. Whisk in cream.
Divide dates among 6 shallow serving bowls; place scoops of gelato into bowls. Drizzle with coffee cream and serve immediately.
